maitenence programs?

can people make suggestions on good programs that are good for overall making the pc run faster, faster start up stuff like that

There are several tips for reducing startup time and program lags. One quick approach is to the use the utilitty already found in Windows namely the msconfig utility to reduce unnecessary startups by simply unchecking items that are non essential for sound and video as well as Windows services. A periodic defrag of your drive will keep files from a high degree of fragmentation that will often slow things down. A list of programs for maintainence and even protection from online infections would be as follows.

RegCleaner is one free program for cleaning the system registry of defunct entries remaining after a program is removed.
AVG and others offer protection from pc viruses along with many malwares.
AdAware SE Personal edition cleans off those things that cause popup ads and even some browser hijackers.
CCleaner is one advised for cleaning up useless data on a hard drive.
For XP Pro and Home versions alike Setpoint by Easydesk Software has a retail program for creating any number of system restore points you need as well as creating one on the initial daily startup. That comes in very handy if you have to stop the creation of new ones due to a cleaning of some type of virus or spyware infection where the ones made by Windows are then deleted.
Plus there are various shareware/freeware sites to look over the different catagories like the site at http://www.majorgeeks.com/

Instead, why don't you jsut post a HijackThis log and someone will take a look at it, help you delete virus'/spyware/adware/malware in general. You can do it in the security section here or visit MalwareRemoval.com forums and they can help you out there.

And if nothing is found? Repeated installations and removals of several programs often leave what is often called "orphans" in the system registry as well as undeleted folders in the Program Files directory. Those can bog things down if not cause driver conflicts seen at times when a loose driver is loaded with no program left. Windows errors can also cause the system to slow down with some being misidentified as viruses, malwares, spybots, etc.. No system runs as fast as one that has just seen a fresh copy of Windows put on a clean partition. :D

Read first 3 stickies:

That'll keep ur pc in top shape.

Other than that, its just manual labor. Disk cleanup and defrag.
Also, a good registry cleaner cleanup every once in a while will do your pc good also.

Monitoring your startup programs through START>RUN>MSCONFIG will prevent new unwanted programs from adding itself give u a smoother faster startup.

There are also tweaks you can take, but if you are really not computer knowledgeable, I'd recommend you not to. Also, tools that says they will improve your ram, speed up your pc and internet, etc.. mostly dont work. Or if they do, it is usually not free.

As always, always look for reviews for anything you get online unless you know from past experiences that the programs are good.

There are a ton of "gimics" out there that claim to be able to do this and that to boost performance and a few other things. But often the claims are all they are just claims. The few programs mentioned earlier as well as some other free editions will run effectively on a system without creating other problems. Zone Alarm offers a basic free edition that will prompt you when something tries to install or connect online. Without a good firewall inplace on your system there's an endless amount of crud that can be put on your drive even without you knowing about it! Once you get familiar with the processes involved in maintaining and protecting a system from infections by virus, malware, spyware, etc. then a long list of removers and other tools can be recommended.
