Major PC issues. Please help.

This post may be a little long, but please read, I am really in need of help. I have 15+ years of experience and have never had any of this stuff happen to me.

I recently bought a PC at a computer show as I usually do when I am looking to get a new computer. However this new pc I bought is the only one so far that is giving me this many problems.

It's an ASUS P5N73-AM Motherboard, Core 2 Quad 2.8GHz I believe the bios is Phoenix, not sure if it's AwardBios, but I know its Phoenix.

Anyhow, the computer ran fine when I got it home, I couldn't get on the internet because of AVG Antivirus being pre-installed, so I uninstalled AVG through the control panel. Whenever I would restart my computer this AVG client would keep loading in the system tray and I went out online and got an AVG remover that did get rid of it all.

I installed Avast Antivirus before I removed the AVG client, no problems there. I burned a normal cd rom disk in my DVD burner drive. After a while of restarting the computer, my theme I had set to Windows Classic, would automatically change back to Windows XP theme. That went on for about 2 weeks and then I left it alone, cause I kept changing it back to classic. One day when I turned the computer on, it was back to classic, even though the night before I had turned it off the XP theme was still active.

My next issue after all of that, was the mouse cursor. It would just all of a sudden freeze on my screen, pressing ctrl+alt+delete didn't work until the computer became unfroze. So its like, something is freezing the system up. And during the course of all of this, I did alot of reboots. Couple of days later things were acting normal and I wanted to burn a dvd, I then got a message telling me something about, A power reset or bus reset yadda yadda or another application has taken over. Basically, I couldn't burn DVD's or CD's.

Maybe a day or however long after it was, the DVD icon in My Computer was gone, so I did a restart and went into the bios. No DVD was showing up in the list in the bios, so I did another restart, hit del to load the bios, only this time, the main ASUS splash screen sat there for at least a full minute, saying, entering bios setup.... it finally put me in the bios and there was my DVD drive as it should be in the list in the bios. So I get back into XP and it's still not showing the DVD icon under My Computer, so I went to Add/Remove Hardware, reinstalled it, and it showed up. Now when I put a blank disk in the drive, the icon name will change from DVD Rom Drive to Cd Rom Drive. And any disk I place in the drive, a little cd icon will appear next to the mouse cursor, which never did that before I did the Add/Remove Hardware on the DVD drive.

I was then told Avast is no good to use, so I uninstalled that, and my mouse lockup cursor problem went away... for about 2 days, then came back. I also had Ad-Aware installed at the time, so I removed that as well. And as it is standing right as of now, I still cannot burn any CD or DVD disks, I cannot even load Windows XP from the DVD rom drive when the computer starts, even tho in the bios the current boot up sequence is Removable, Hard Disk, Cd-Rom. I even changed Removable to Cd-Rom and it didn't work, and while I was having these same problems last night, the DVD rom drive wouldn't show up in the bios list at all, and then just from going in time after time, it would show up. But I have no way of manually selecting the DVD drive in the bios. But under the PNIPcP I did set that to yes, but I haven't noticed any changes.

I am planning on taking the computer back to have it looked at but any thoughts or suggestions on whats going on?

Id try running a scan with malwarebytes anti malware. Although you might just want to reinstall windows xp, sounds like your os is corrupted possibly..

Yes I have ran Malwarebytes, 0 objects infected. I had to run that in safe mode because it kept coming up as Program not responding error, but I think it may have been crashing like that due to Ad-Aware being installed at the time.

Could be something up with your memory, hard drive, windows xp install, etc.

there is defiantly wrong with your system and im guessing its a one time only thing. get it replaced and it should work. and another pointer might be take off everything that u did urself.

Yea that's what i'm hoping it is. I'm glad tho that I was able to contact the business, as years ago, a vendor would sell you junk computers or whatever, and the phone number that you called would then be disconnected and that vendor would never show up again.

But I spoke with these guys, oh about 6 hours ago, and said I'd be at the next computer show with the system. If they can't fix whatever this problem is i'm tellin em I want my money back.

Thanks for the replies, I really do appreciate it :)

sounds like a quickly thrown together system. Reisntall your os or format your hdd and install, but sounds like theres some hardware conflicts too.
