Major problem Lenovo SL500 thinkpad

I hope I can get some help here.
My daughter has this thinkpad and it will not load windows vista. Starts up and then goes to blue screen saying encountered problem. Can be run in safe mode but limited functions. No restore, has been turned off by domain admin. Was given to her by insurance company in replace of stolen item. Have tried to run XP restore disk but loads up ready then says has encountered problem and stopped. Really need to format HDD and start over again. Is there a simple solution or is it a job for shop.
 
If it has Vista and a license for it, try and find a Vista install disc and reinstall.

Otherwise, try and bring it to a local computer shop. There may be other issues with it (bad memory, hard drive, etc.)
