major problems with source engine games, (and some others)

I recently switched from an Nvidia Geforce 5200 to an ATI Radeon X850 XT Platinum Edition. (AGP style) and everytime I play day of defeat or counterstrike source, the game will shut down after about 10 minutes or less. sometimes more. It pretty much always happens when I turn sharply or a lot of stuff is going on. Sometimes my computer will restart when I'm not even doing anything to it. Games like Dungeon Siege I can play for about an hour or so before it happens, and all the other games i have, have their specific play times before they quit too.

I've got the most current bios version, I've got the most current drivers, I've got directx 9.0c I've tried everything I can think of to fix this problem and it keeps happening.

just recently I switched video cards with my cousin, he has a Nvidia Geforce 6800 GT. His worked in my machine longer than my X850 did, but ended up getting the same result. the game just shuts down

i've been trying for 4 months to get this to work right, can anybody please help me with this? I would really appreciate it.

abit v17 motherboard
1Gb of dimm ram
80 gb hard drive
intel pentium 4 ht 2.8Ghz
ATI Radeon X850 XT Platinum Edition

Sounds like your PSU doesnt have enough power for the new cards. What model PSU do you have and what are the watts and amps on the +12V rail? (it should be on a sticker on the side of the PSU)

i have a dynex dx-ps300W

115/230V, 60/50Hz, 7/4A

i hope thats enough, thats all i saw that looked important

First, 300 watts is not enough to power them, and secondly, if it means you have 4 amps on your 12V, I don't see how your computer runs!

is that the reason that it restarts the whole computer sometimes, is that theres not enough power?

what would you recommend i get to have enough power for those, because on the box my x850 came in, it said 300W was enough

I had the same problem as you. Although for me it was because my video card got tooooo hot. If it still happens after you get a new powersupply, then that is most likely the reason

i dont want to spend more than 60 dollars... i will, but i'm on a fixed budget as it is.

so if i get a new power supply and its still shutting down programs its because my video card is too hot? what would i do to fix that, turn the graphics down in the games i play?

that CANT be the reason, you tested it with a 6800gt! as long as it hadn't been shuttin down in yur cuzins computer then im sure it's the power supply.

i probably no the problem. download ati-tool and up the fan speed. its probably overheating. i up my 1800 xt to 70% so it wont overheat wile playing video games

well his 6800GT has been ending programs and shutting down my computer also, i think its getting too hot. because after about 10 minutes of playing, i hear a fan speed up, and then 10 minutes after that the game quits. sometimes it restarts my computer also.

so i switched video cards with him and it does the exact same thing. does that mean my video card works perfectly, its just some other problem on my end?

that would be awesome, i wont have to dick around with ati to get a new card. I just wanted to thank all you guys right now, you've really helped me out and i appreciate it so much.

i downloaded the ati tool, and it says my card temp is like 40 and 50, i havent had the chance to see how high it really goes, because the games shut down now in about 2 minutes.

it always happens when a lot of stuff is going on, like a grenade blows up in front of me while 4 guys are rushing at me. Thats a scenario that it will shut down, normal video cards may lag a little bit. but mine shuts down. AND thats when i have the graphics on low, like no AA, and i'm on trilinear.

My x850 xt Platinum edition should be able to handle that... right?

That's the input specs, not the output. Take off the side of your case - the important data should be on the side of the PSU. Look for something that says +12V, and give us the number next to it.

Those temps are fine
