Making a Forum: How do I setup a server?

Ok, it dawned on me today that I should setup a server of my own first to experiment with before I get a web host. The question is, how? I have a 2.2 GHz P4 system lying dormant, and I want to learn how to do this in Windows or Linux. Any ideas?

There are loads of TuTs on Youtube and if you use google you will find loads.

Thanks, Jack. I think I'm almost done getting it working on my main rig with the tutorial I linked to. Had to dig through some problems, though, because I accidentally downloaded the zip file of php5 instead of the MSI file, and needless to say I had no idea (even with the included documentation) on how to install it. So, I went on Abyss WS' website to learn to get it installed in it, and I found that they had their own version, already configed and everything. I'm downloading it currently.

Got the server set up. After doing some configurating of phpmyadmin, the database manager, I got it working, and got phpBB working on my server. Now to get MyBB cookie problems sorted out.
