I want to make a sports forum.... How do I go about doing so? I plan on having quite a few members, could I host on my home server? How do I build it?

Thanks

What is PHPbb? May seem a newb question to you... And I am a newb... Stuff like this is not my strong point...

it is hard to explane. it gives you a basic forum that you add the forum topics too and coustimise it.

I have never set up a forum, but the best looking ones I have seen, and the easiest to use all seem to use vBulletin software. Including the CF forum.

http://www.vbulletin.com/

Also, I think having it hosted some where other than your computer is a good idea. Having to leave your system on all the time sucks, and if some company hosts it, they do the back ups of all your data, so if something crashes they can restore it.

Perhaps someone could give me the requirements of space that I will need to store posts/threads. What about like Administrator stuff and the database? How does all of this work?

Thanks

still it is free or 160. i like free... And yes. phpbb is exactly like this site. it is almost the same. i dont know the specs. but i would say a 500 GB would easly be enough. here i will pm you with my site to show you what it is like.

Uhh people you should be trying to help him not just throw software names at him.

Alright PhpBB is pretty good but you must remember that this isn't the only option, there are other software like it such as IPB (Invision Power Board), and if you want a forum that's you can make and customise MUCH quicker I would probbably go for a online forum host who has free software, a good company who does this is www.invisionfree.com they have alot of people who run boards with them and ect.

then you just walk over to www.ifsz.com to get a skin to customize it, either way in my oppinion you probbably would want to go with IPB (that's if you have the $150.00 to pay for it) or you could just use invision free, either way both are very user friendly.

Oh yeah and BTW Invision free, you would just sign up and customize the board, but with IPB you will also need to find a host (You could host it from your own server) but with IPB you get some extra features.

Sorry if I couldn't have been of more help,

Kent.

this is how i did mine

OK intelcrazy, i have my own forum, not internet based but intranet, only in the office.
Go HERE and download the forum template.
Now when done, get a PC and make it as a server, you're gonna need IIS or Apache with support for PHP and MySql.
MySQL is free for download here.
then create a small php webpage to test if SQL+php is actually running along with IIS or apache whichver you used.

i'm just giving you the link to stuff i wont actually tell you how to create user/database mods etc as it's pretty straight forward.

cheers

I love phpbb...kinda.
I like how its free and easy to use but they're taking forever on the development of phpbb3...[Hijack]Anyone know when its comming out?[/Hijack]

Have fun (I had fun running my clan forum).

it is out.

well the alfa. it is very stable. i am useing it right now. love it but it is harder to setup the topics. like the old way better

I want whichever one I can customize most but, without the difficulty of changing everything... I am wanting to host it on my home server, b/c it's sitting here doing nothing... I need to install a quieter HDD in it  Where do I find Apache with MySQL and PHP support, is it on all versions of Apache.. My home server has Apache and XP on it right now, do I need Linux or could I still use XP?

Thanks guys

No need of Linux...

I run mine on a normal server...
All you need to do is install the forum on your server. There are many types of frum and you can easily get one for free.
