making DVD size file smaller

Hey,
I want to burn some of my DVD's onto my computer so I can watch them on the bus rides home. (from college) But when I burnt one (munich) it came out to be about 7-8 gigs. I was wondering how I can make it smaller something at least, around 3-4 gigs, if possible, maybe loosing some of the quality, but still looks good. If you know of any free ware- or software, just let me know, thanks a lot.

(Yes I really bought the DVD's not trying to do anything illegal)

Regardless if you own the DVD or not, you have to break the copy protection to "rip" to your computer. This will not be discussed here.
