Max Burn Speed

Hey I have I think an 8X DVD Burner...and it always says max burn speed is 8x..but current burn speed is always lurking around 5-6X...ne one know how to maximize the burn speed? I mean i have no complaints..i can burn a couple o gigs in 5 minutes...but I was juat wondering

Why do you want to push the burn speed up? That is the fastest way I know of to generate coffee caosters.

it all depends... 8x is max, but it takes time for the computer parts to communicate, plus the buffer in the drive takes time...
5-6x is pretty fast anyways.

ohhk thanks..ye ai have a 16x drive..and my media is 8x...so i guess 6x isnt bad...appreciate the responses

Remember that the fastest speeds are attained as the DVD becomes full and is burning near the outer edges. Just so you know, I routinely burn at 12X throughout the whole disc. I use good quality blank DVD media rated at 16X and a good quality DVD Burner. Also the performance of your computer will greatly affect burn speeds. I use a dual core 64X 4200 CPU.

Gee? Will that mean I have to dump this old Socket A board with an Atholon XP3200 and 2gb of Kingston performance memory just to get a good burn? Naa... Surprisingly the 4x media being used was found to more reliable then the 16x blanks bought locally at retail. At those didn't have any track info already on the suppsedly blank disks where the burner rejected them when trying to write to them.

Nobody said that. If you notice he is running a XP3700. Though a slow CPU will have affect on burn speed along with the other things that I mentioned. As I said, quality media is the main thing.

If you don't have good disks you won't see good results is too often the rule. The surprise here was seeing the opposite take place when an excellent brand for reliability with cd-rs for backups along with vcd projects even saw a batch come through with track data already on the blanks. When going out to buy an older generic 4x brand that usually sees good results the same type of track data info was seen again.

The hardware detection by the software you use can also see a difference with speed due to a few different things like the make and model drive you use along with that program's method of processing. But that there only effects speed before the write to the drive begins. You can have the latest P4 or Opteron cpu out and still be limited to the drive's own liimits as well as the media used.

I've had some misery with cheapies in the past when the early cd writers were just coming out. Those also were the sssloww... days there due to max speeds seen at around 2x, 4x, 6, 12x for cd-writers. Memorex gets my "disapproval" to this day while some others like TDK for cd-rs work great.

Hmm interesting; When I have used memorex media, I had no problems with burning reliable at the fastest speed. Many times though, certain media works better with certain brands of burners. Often you have to try different combinations until you find what works best for you.

Now that's putting it right on the money! Having tried different brands on the drives I have been using through the years I found that TDKs worked best with the Sony model cd writers while some off name generic 4x dvd-rs see the best result on a Sony DRU530a dvd-r/rw drive. That model dvd drive finally read a cd-r earlier. That's a switch.
