Max RAM XP will run?

Is it true that Windows XP will only see about 3.4GB of memory...making a purchase of 8GB (I only ask since I see mobos that support up to 8GB) a worthless investment? Thanks.

if you run 32 bit it is 3.25 or a little less than in XP. If you run 64bit its more but im not sure what the cap is

32 bit is capped at 4gb, but that includes gpu memory as well.
