I have a gateway btx 7-bay 16.5h x 8.0w x 17.5d case. Its an old fx400x with a nvidia geforce 6800 ultra GPU. The slot is a PCI-E x16. I am trying to find out what is the maximum allowable size dimension wise is for the GPU slot.

Crack open the case and measure from the expansion slots to the hard drive cages. That is how long a graphics card it can support. Also, with a new graphics card, you may have to replace your power supply.

Consider too that if you get a power supply requiring additional PCIe power connectors and they happen to be on the end of the card rather than the side, that cuts off at least an inch from your available space to have room both for the plug and cable to bend around

well you can look at the card and make sure the one you buy has side mounted plugs

Yes you can, but if you manage to find a card that is a great deal in the price range but they aren't on the side, it will be no good to you. Whilst you may be able to afford it and whilst it may give good price/performance, it will also be too long even though the physical card is not
