Maximum hz for my monitor

As my signature says, i have a samsung 172x.

I had read that it's maximum hz capacity is 75. my ATI software doesn't reccomend anything more than 70. I bumped it anyway to 75 and my monitor shorted out and quit working!!! j/k. Seriously, I did notice a slight difference in the movement of things...it almosts eliminates ghosting.

my question is if i keep it at a 75hz refresh rate is that going to damage the monitor?

Shouldnt but you should also check the manual ... that'll tell you for sure
