Maximum RAM

If i have a laptop which is only capable of holding 512mb ram, can i update the motherboard in some way so it can hold more?

No you can't... Not unless there's a motherboard made for the exact case being used that is capable of holding more RAM. There is no set standard for laptop motherboards, connectors, or anything like that.
