McAfee Update - Computer Not Working Now?

Hey!

I updated McAfee the other day and now my computer is playing up, i click internet or firefox and nothing happens, I tried to run Malwarebytes it now comes up and says theres a problem;

"Runtime error 372: "Failed to load control vbalgrid from vbalsgrid6.ocx. Your version of vbalsgrid may be outdated"

I tried to do a system restore but it won't let me. I even tried booting up with the windows xp disk and going to repair and doing a chkdsk /r - but its coming up saying "The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems"

Anyone know how to fix whats wrong with my computer?

Yes. This new mcafee update has killed many windows xp machines. apparantly it deletes svchost.exe causing an infinite boot loop. you have a different problem still related to mcafee.

I would suggest running in safe mode with networking and then uninstall mcafee and use a macafee remover afterwards to clean up the leftovers, followed by ccleaner and malwarebytes (update it first)

Thanks for the suggestions.

I got as far as reinstall malwarebytes again, but its still coming up with the ;

Runtime error 372: "Failed to load control vbalgrid from vbalsgrid6.ocx. Your version of vbalsgrid may be outdated"

So I cant open it to update it, any other suggestions?

You require to download the EXTRA.DAT fix that McAfee released after the problem occurred. Since you probably can’t download this from your own computer, you will need to find a working computer and put it on a USB flash drive or burn it to a CD.

Thanks

Thanks so far :)

But I already uninstalled McAfee, any other tips on how to get things running again?

Still can't open up the net when I click it, same with most program files.

Any help?

AVG for antivirus. the paid version is quite nice if your computer has the resources for it. Also, if you can't launch anything i would suggest booting from your windows xp cd and doing a repair install, it will fix the issue (in this case a missing svchost.exe)

thanks for the suggestions, but like I said above about the programs not opening etc.

I can't repair with the windows disk as when I do the 'chkdsk /r' it comes up and says "the volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems"

any ideas what to do?

is your hard drive partitioned in any way?? because perhaps the chkdsk is not finding your drive properly?? so you could try this chkdsk d: /p

also you could get a hard drive diagnostic tool to check your hard drive for you

Download and run the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic utility (they run from floppy, there is no need to boot into Windows). Here are the most common ones:

hope this helps
