Media Centre PCs - for the lounge

My dad seems keen to upgrade our lounge room to the "next generation" of home theatre... but hes got no idea of whats goin on so hes delegated the research to me...

I've read reviews on a couple of Viiv machines, Pioneer's MCE Set Top Box PC, and Claritas' CTV1200LCD Viiv MCE system...
but i'm still only scratching the surface of what i want/need to know.
I want it to be easily upgradable, so the Pioneer system is out of the question... (it needs low profile PCI cards)

Is there an equivelant to Viiv? Would it be easy enough to design and build one myself or should i buy a pre-made machine like the ones mentioned above?
 
AMD is coming out with AMD Live, same thing as Viiv, and it rhymes! i dont know if they have come out yet, but it would prob be better than Viiv. Look on AMD's site.
