Media Consumption Computer

My netbook is about dead or close enough to be an excuse to start shopping around. My initial thought was to get a laptop but I never take it out if my house. As a result I am considering attempting a cheap build.

The computer would be for streaming, web browsing, maybe running some very low spec games but would like that to be an afterthought and not factor into the build initially.

How cheaply could I build I reliable machine to perform these functions? I was hoping to spend $300 if at all possible. My thought was to remove the laptop hard drive and if there were a way to test it use that. Doing odd stuff like that could save on costs. Small size would be best.

Anyone have any thoughts or ideas for parts? I like the bitpheonix cases but that eats up a quarter if the cost alone.

Windows costs 100 and all so at that budget it's best to just buy a cheap dell or something with an i3 preferably but anything these days is strong enough for that and they almost always have decent graphics

Windows I am leaving out of the budget. Figured I would see how far I can get for the price. Shopping online so far has ranged from a macbook to a nexus 7 to a cheap dell laptop. As of now I am not entirely set on price.

Did find Silverstone cases that are a little more flexible with the type of motherboard and look like a home theater component. Seems like a nice idea.
