Media PC Cooling

Hi,
I currently have an Athlon XP 1700+ (1.47GHz), GA-7VTXE motherboard with VIA KT266A chipset, 80GB hard drive, Creative Soundblaster Live! with front I/O thing, ATI Readon 9200 vid card and 1GB RAM. I am, when I get my new Core 2 Duo Computer, going to purchase a WinTV-PVR-150 and maybe a bigger hd for this computer and make it a media PC/Server. The problem is, you can hear the fan from the family room (with a kitchen and stairway inbetween), and it is going right beside my TV and stereo. Is there anyway I can make it quiet enough to use as a media PC, without getting water cooling? Might a new fan be better?

Thanks, Hengy

And make sure it's screwed tightly to the case. Putting small, flat pieces of rubber between the case and fan pretty much stops any vibration being transferred to case.

If it's running cool enough, might be worth slowing it down a bit.

You can get a Fan Controller on newegg.com or other places.
This will help to tune down the fan speed to satisfy both cooling and noise emissions and cost you about $25.

From what I heard, a Core 2 Duo may not emit as much heat as even a slower 1.5 GHz CPU.

Thanks guys.

I am not going to buy a whole new system to solve it. I am getting a new system, but that is going to be my main computer. This one im on now is going to be converted to a Media PC.

Maybe post suggestions of good, quiet fans. Or fans that are so good that you might not need to have them up all the way?
