Media Player 11 Problem

I updated Vista to SP1 but now media player won't open. It might not be related to the update but i can't remember when it stopped working. I do know it was after the update. I'm running Vista ultimate 32bit if it matters.

I was looking for an setup file to download from the Microsoft website but all i found was for xp. Any ideas on what I should do?

WMP 11 in Vista only sees one security update and one other since the new version came out for the player. Since 11 comes with Vista you won't find it as a separate item just as 9 was included in XP/SP2 releases with 10 and 11 as optional updates.

MS offers free email and live phone chat for problems seen following the SP1 installation. You could use that as a reason for a live chat. Using a system restore point to go back before SP1 was installed may not solve a pre-existing problem. http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?LN=en-us&prid=11274&gprid=500921&x=16&y=16

In over a year's time having reinstalled Vista several times I've never seen WMP fail to open. You may be seeing a registry glitch or have a dll file missing. Unfortunately MS doesn't have much in the way of troubleshooting WMP11 at their support page. http://support.microsoft.com/ph/7763#tab0

I was able to fix it. Not sure what error was causing it to not work but if anyone else comes across this problem try this.

Just open the windows media player folder and there should be several icons with the WMP logo. One is the setup file and another says wmpconfig.exe. I double clicked it and something seemed to run but nothing opened. Then I waited for the hour glass to stop and then clicked the WMP icon and it opened with no problem.

I don't know what it did but it works again :D

It may have been a driver that was never fully installed and made active. Once you toyed around in the folder a little it finally was seen by Windows and made active. That would be the first thought.

At least it's working now for you without having to reinstall Windows all over just to get it going. That can be a pain once you have everything set the way you want it and then... GGrrrr... problems, problems, problems!
