Media Player and Midi files

I used to be able to play midi files, both downloaded and keyboard sourced in Media Player. After cleaning up my system, I get the midi files indicating that they are playing per display, but no sound output. File types (midi) is checked in Media Player options.
Where do I go from here ?

When first installing Windows or simply going to use a fresh installation of WMP even when updating you can have WMP perform an automatic search for all media files on the drive. This way when you double click on any file WMP will automatically open and play the file. What that does is add files into the WMP library. Give that a try to see you then see the midi files play. Which version of WMP? XP or Vista?

The files in question copied in to the library under "other media", as "mid" files. Does that make any difference ?

File extensions seen in Windows are two or three digit maybe only one in some cases. This is how Windows itself as well as WMP recognizes the various file types. If you browse through any folder on your hard drive and you will note that just about every file with an extension will see 3digits. The "mid" for WMP simply is the 3 digit representaion of midi there.

Are you running WMP 9, 10, or upto 11? WMP 10 has proven itself the best for XP. WMP 11 is too wrapped around the Vista design and many want to remove it later from XP once they have the upgrade on.

Besides a possible need to reinstall 10 if it comes to that go through your sound setting for "midi synth" to see if the volume level is all the way down for some reason. If you have a sound card installed that would be in the sound mixer section.

Apparently there's an echo in here somewhere? hhhhmmm... newbie! That was already mentioned before as one thing to try.
