I don't think my fan is working at all, the laptop gets really hot quickly!!!!

To replace anything I'd have to remove the whole of the back as it's just one thing. Will I damage anything by just removing the back?

EDIT: Will be looking into getting a notebook cooler also

Those temps are pretty high. How fast does it get hot from startup? (An abnormal hot, not warm)
If you just unscrew the screws and pop the bottom/back off you won't damage it (You just have to be careful when doing so).
Do you think that it's dusty inside? You might want to get a spray can of air (buy it at mostly any computer store) and spray that bad boy in there and loosen up the dust, junk and what not!

Laptop heat

So;

How old is your laptop?

How often do you use it? Who uses it, just you or others as well. Kids are sometimes "less than careful" with electronics.

Can you hear a fan running, even softly? Your fan may be going out or is already burned out, it happens occasionally.

Where are you placing your laptop when its on? If your leaving it on a bed or other soft (insulating) material then I'd bet its that. My brother killed his HP laptop by leaving it on his bed. Put your laptop on a hard surface, and if at all possible use a cooling stand.

What programs are you running, are they really system intensive? Do you run games, auto-cad, photo/video editing software, have you scanned your computer for viruses lately?

How many running processes are listed in task manager?

Where do you physically go with your laptop? For instance, I use mine more like a desktop, its on my desk and I almost never move it. Whereas some people carry their laptop everywhere they go. Do you use a bag to carry your laptop when on the go? Are your leaving it on if in a bag?

When was the last time you cleaned your laptop?

Are you running CD/DVD disks a lot when you see it overheat? Optical disk drives create heat, not as much heat as your seeing, but they do contribute. In conjunction with other problems they can bring heat to a problematic level.

is there direct sunlight on your laptop throughout the day. Is where you use your laptop hot, either climate or indoor temp? Do you ever keep your laptop in a hot location, like in your vehicle?

I hope you don't take any offense to any of these questions, just trying to hit all the bases.

A laptop like that running Vista is probably going to be rather stressed. My guess is it's probably a cheaper laptop with a poor air circulation.

As mentioned, try cutting down on any additional processes. Close any programs running in the background you don't need. Disable the eye candy(Aero). If you want to go all out, set it to power saver if available. This usually halves your processor speed but can dramatically help with heat (and battery life).

Unless the laptop's really acting up, it might be fine to just let it run warm. I have seen some laptops idle around those temps. As long as it's not locking up, you should basically be alright. Not to say lower temps aren't desirable :P
