my friend has a very bad virus on his pc, its deleted allot of the required windows files. its not worth it to try and fix, how do i swipe th hdd and reinstall windows xp home? i have the cd

Place the CD into the optical drive and reboot your PC. If the install does not start you can try either of the two following during the beginning of the boot sequence.

1. hit F8 (or similar key depending on PC) and choose the optical drive too boot.
2. hit Delete key (or similar, depending on PC), go into bios and boot settings, set your optical as main boot device then HD as second.

Read carefully during the install process and you should be fine.

With the XP cd running as if you were going to install by following the onscreen instructions you reach the point where the drive(s) and partition(s) are detected by the installer itself. You would look for the "L" option to delete the current partition. The next screen after pressing the "L" letter key will see the "D" for delete. That will be the one that removes the partition you highlight.

Upon deletion and returning to the installation options you will then have to create a new partition. At that time you can custom size the first partition in case more then one is decided on. The second partition you can create there would usually be used as a storage partition to back up important files in case something like this(virus infection) takes place. Even though the primary sees an infection or damage to partition information the second partition remains intact. If your friend has a large drive this is one thing to consider.
