Memorex DVD Recorder (External) Freezes Computer - Can't Read Discs

Hi!
I just bought a Memorex External Dual Format Double Layer DVD Recorder (Model# 3202-3288).
Whenever I put a CD or DVD in the drive my computer completely freezes. This happens regardless of whether I'm using the USB or Firewire connection. The only way I can get it to read is by turning my computer off, putting a disc in the drive, and then booting back up.
Is anybody familiar with this problem? Memorex Tech Support told me I have a faulty drive but... I'm a little skeptical.
Any advice would be really helpful.
Thanks!

Here's my system:
2.4Ghz Intel Core2 Duo
Intel P965 Chipset
Windows XP Pro SP2
3GB RAM
300GB Free HD space
I'm using the Nero6 software that came with the drive.

Has it ever worked? Does it work on another computer? Could you stick it inside your computer(take the drive out of the enclosure) and try it that way?

Thanks for the quick reply!
The drive has never worked... I just bought it on Monday.
Unfortunately I don't have another computer to test it on and the drive is completely external, it doesn't have an enclosure.

I would take it back to where you got it at becuase thats not good if its already screwed up and if they wont take it back contact memorex for a RMA and get it returned and get it replaced!

So, I packaged up the Memorex and got it all ready to ship.

Then I installed an internal IDE Sony CD-RW that worked just fine on another computer last week. It's acting the same exact way. What's going on? Is it possible that theres a BIOS or Windows setting that's messed up?

Solution: Uninstall InCD4

The Nero6 software bundle that comes with the Memorex includes InCD4 which... must have some issue with SP2 or SOMETHING. After uninstalling it, everything runs fine.

Thanks to everyone who responded!
