Memory DDR, DDR2

What is the difference between DDR, DDRZ or DDR2 or SDRAM memory sticks. Saw them in my local second hand computer shop. By the way, what is a sound card? IS it the same as a graphics card?
 
DDR is dual data rate, its a type of dynamic ram (DRAM) its pretty standard but DDR2 is going to replace it.

DDR2 is almost the same as DDR, only its faster and has capabilities of dual channel. As for SDRAM, its synchronous DRAM, but those are kinda old..`

As for the sound card, i guess you could say its like a graphics card, only its dedicated to sound :p

DDR is not the standard, DDR2 has been the standard for a while, and DDR3 is coming to replace it shortly.

DDR also supports dual-channel, not just DDR2.
 
I'm not sure it is correct to say that any type of ram supports dual channel. It is soley a function of the memory controller (independent of the type of ram), to spread the work out on more than one channel.

Where did I say any type of RAM will work in dual-channel?

You are correct that it is the memory controller which determines whether or not you can utilize dual-channel (which is what I said as well).
 
It was just the phrase "DDR/2/3 supports dual-channel" I ment
It is true though that DDR, DDR2, and DDR3 all support dual-channel. However as I also stated, it depends on the motherboard and memory controller to determine whether or not you can utilize dual-channel.

My argument is: they don't. No RAM does.
 
Dual Channel is a Function of the memory controller. Is just so happens that Dual Channel memory controllers didnt come out till after DDR was realeased

I see your point, but that depends how you define "support".

If you say "support" means it works with, than RAM do "support" Dual-Channel.
If you say "support" means it does it, than RAM doesn't "support" Dual-channel.

Is there a true definition for support, or is it just thrown around these days? Look at "Vista Ready" which is another way to say supports vista, many software and hardware "support Vista" even if the developers didn't modify anything. Since they didn't change anything does it really support Vista? hmm.
