Hi i have a mac powerbook and a compaq desktop, my question is mostly about my mac, you see it only has 40 gigs of space(im pretty sure thats how much it has) which is sufficient but i am super paranoid about this computer crashing or getting infected, ive had it for more than a year and have 38 gigs left, haha and i am a music freak, i had to put a 200 gig hard drive in my compaq, haha but i would really like to start recording with my laptop, but i know if i start i wont be able to stop and i will fill my computer up within at least a month or two, so i was wondering if anyone could suggest a good, cheap, relatively large external hard drive i could use, i dont know much about them at all, any info would be great, and i was also wondering if i did get an external hard drive, would i be able to use it on both the pc and mac. if not that is perfectly fine but i was just wondering, like i said before, any reccomendations, info, or anything of that sort is appriciated greatly, thank you everyone.

i have a250gig ide drive that i put in an external enclosure. my neighbor borrowed it to transfer files from his old pc to his new macbook pro. i don't see a compatibility problem. i would get an external enclosure (usb) and you can put any size hdd inside, even an old drive you may have laying around or something. it's cheaper than buying one all ready together.

you are paranoid about your mac getting infected? that's funny.:P

yeah i know its stupid to worry about a mac getting infected, i didnt know you could just buy enclosures and put hard drives in them, ill have to check that out, thanks

i have this one: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=31389&CatId=1204

this one has a cooling fan inside, and it's definately mac compatible. i just put my old ide drive in here when i got my satas.

there are cheaper ones out there, i just bought this one because it matched my old pc (see my avatar).

just make sure the interface is correct. if you have, or want, to put a sata drive inside, you have to buy a sata enclosure.

that should do the trick. maybe spend a little more for one with a 16mb buffer instead of 8mb.

okay thanks, id be traveling with it quite a bit so i was attracted to the size of it. i will definately look for one with a better buffer.
