Is there any true advantage of going with a 1gig chip over (2) 512 chips other than the simple fact of being able to put more in overall? Make it run faster or anything?

Well running a single chip is easier to run command rate 1T. Of course since you're lookin at a single channel setup, that's not your biggest concern

Lol

In all reality what does a registered chip do that a unregistered one doesn't? Also..........normally any board can run any kind of "ddr ram" as long as it is the same pin count correct?

no, putting registered memory into a motherboard with a memory controller that doesn't want it will not work.

generally you can look it it :) just take the chipset (or processor for A64s) search for weather it needs registered/ECC memory. It is usually only on server boards but some of the athlon 64s needs it (athlon 64 FX)

Thanks

I have heard that if it specifically needs it it will tell you in the booklet you got with the motherboard. Thanks for the help

Allows for error correction

Are you certain there arent exceptions to that? (perhaps with some really older systems)

How can you tell if the memory controller needs "registered" or not?
Read the memory type.

some of the athlon 64s needs it (athlon 64 FX)
Specifically socket940 athlonFX chips
