Memory leak

My brother just was over and the subject of computers was brought up. He told me that his computer has a gig of memory left and yet the default windows message came up saying he is running low on memory. An employee he works with suggested it could be a memory leak. I have searched it on these forums and i have found some interesting threads but i am still confused on the whole subject. What is the cause of a memory leak, is that what my brother is having problems with, and is there a proper diagnosis that can fix this problem?... Any feedback would be much appreciated :-D

All a memory leak is is when a program fails to free up memory when it's done using it. The easiest way to narrow down what the problem is would be to look at the Windows Task Manager, and put all the processes in order of memory usage. When you know the program that's causing it, then it's easier to suggest a solution.

Do you mean that window keep popping up in the lower right hand corner saying that there isn't sufficient memory?

Or, does the computer just not recognize the memory, which he has 1 gb?

It can probably be interpreted in different ways, so let's just clear that up and we could probably narrow it down to what his real problem may be.

Windows won't say you're running low on memory- the only real indication that you need more memory in your computer is that it's really slow and takes forever in opening programs, etc. I do, however, sometimes get a message that I am running low on hard disk space, which I think you are confusing with memory.

ha. Ok thank you .. but yah its the windows message about disk space.. i will ask him to look in his task manager.. Already feel like a computer scrub :-/.. Thanks

disk space or memory? Cause they're two different things..

If it is Windows 98 or lower, the OS will only allow 512mb of system RAM. This might be the problem, as Windows will give the "Windows is running low on virtual memory" message.
