I am trying to figure out which would be better. Getting 4 1GB sticks and SLI them on a EVGA 780 A-1 mobo, or get 2 sticks at 2gb but, no SLI.
 
Getting 2gb of good memory and simply running one good model video card would be the smart move. Many lack seeing any gain when running an SLI or Crossfire setup. When 4gb was considered here on a new work horse type build where there's more demand for memory it simply saw 2gb of a good brand of performance memory.
 
You don't SLi memory, that's for the graphics cards, you can get SLi memory but that stuff it tuned to support the system better.
 
A pair of 2gb dimms over four 1gb dimms of the same type will always see things run better just like it is when running a pair of 1gb dimms over using four 512s. Both show 4-4-4-15 while the second SLI memory sees the 1T rather then usual 2T dram setting there. Most memory even with performance dimms used see the auto if not 2T otherwise you end up clearing the cmos fast.
 
They use that term to make it sound bigger and better since people are looking at SLI and Crossfire setups for gaming builds. "oh buy this memory! it's the best blah clah blah since it says SLI on it." crap!
 
By looking over what a system requires depending on the type of build you can generally find some good memory that will work out quite well. The last two builds here went from 1gb of performance memory to 2gb of value ram to see an improvement there.

For the current build I then pondered on 2 or 4gb but stuck with 2gb of performance memory along with moving up from a single core to dual cpu seeing 3ghz over the former 2.22ghz. The combination of things is what actually saw lasting results performance wise.

4-4-4-14 2T for the 2gb of Kingston Hyper X DDR2 800 memory over DDR400 made that happen as well as the cpu change. OCZ and Corsair were also considered as well brand wise.
