Memory Question

So I'm building a new computer and have decided to go with the ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboard. Picking memory for this machine is quickly becomming the biggest pain of this process. ASUS's website gives a list of memory that is compatible with their motherboard. However, differnt manufacturers also give lists of memory that they claim is compatible with the motherboard and these lists don't also coincide. So who do I listen to?

Additionally, when reading through the RAM 101 it mentioned Kingston (HyperX) for an overclocked gaming machine. I have mainly been looking at Kingston's website and they don't list any HyperX RAM for this motherboard. I was under the impression that this one of the top-of-the-line motherboards out at the moment and was surprised to find that the top-of-the-line memory wasn't compatible with it, or did I missinterpret something?

It is compatible, the 'compatible' RAM that is listed on the Asus website and in the manual are just the stuff they tested it with. If the RAM manufacturer says it's compatible it is.

Thanks for the info. I'm basically looking to put in 2 gigs of the best possible memory I can get for gaming. If anyone has any suggestions they would be appreciated.

2 gigs is a lot, maybe even overkill. But i'm not the best to tell you this, tweaker or preator will be along later, they may be able to help you

I think I've narrowed my choices down to two but I could use some advice in making the final decision. Both are Corsair XMS models but one is 1 gig (2x512) with a cas latency of 2 and timings of 2-2-2-5. The other is 2 gigs (2x1024) with a cas latency of 3 and timings of 3-3-3-8. Both are about $250 and identical in every other aspect.

So my question is, how much of an impact do latencies and timings make compared to raw size? This system will be primarily for gaming in large worlds rather than fast moving ones if that makes a difference (such as EQ2 compared to Doom 3). Any help would be appreciated.

If you want 2GB of memory you can do better then 3-3-3-8 for around $250

If you want 2gb of memory I would recommend OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR Dual Channel Platinum System Memory.

it is cas 2 and 2-3-2-5. This is some of the best timing I seen in 1GB chips.
