Memory reported as "Wrong Value" in diagnostic and PC reboots abruptly

Hi,

I have been using my PC with following configuration since Aug'10 -

Pentium Dual CPU E2180 @ 2 Ghz
Gigabyte GA-945GCM-S2L motherboard
1 x 1Gb Transcend JetRAM (JM667QLJ-1G, DDR2 PC2-5300, 333 x 2 = 667 Mhz)
1 x 2Gb Transcend JetRAM (JM667QLU-2G, DDR2 PC2-5300, 333 x 2 = 667 Mhz)
Seagate 160Gb HDD
Windows XP SP3 (built-in SP3)
Standard PS2 Keyboard & mouse

The 2GB RAM was installed about an year ago, and both before the upgrade as well as after it, the PC randomly reboots abruptly. Recently, when I used some diagnostic program (SIW 2011.10.29q) to check which hardware component may be the problem, and it reports a "Wrong Value" for the 2048Mb RAM module. I have checked by swapping the memory modules as well with no luck. Also, checked previous posts in this thread and followed the steps to upgrade to BIOS vF8d (from F7) but to no effect. As mentioned by a fellow member on this forum, there is no "memory remapping" option in the BIOS.

BTW, the Windows System Information shows the RAM as 2.99Gb.

Would appreciate help from knowledgeable folks on how to resolve the above issue, as it seems the cause of abrupt reboots. Thanks in advance.

Ramesh

I'm not sure what your issue is here. According to what you have said, you have 3gb of ram installed and thats what you have. If your system is rebooting then most likely its bluescreening and then just restarts. Do the following.

Download BlueScreenView
No installation required.
Unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit>Select All.
Go File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

@Johnb35, I don't get the blue screen reported by Windows on critical errors. The PC just reboots abruptly. I have observed that this happens at random, as I have few programs installed on my PC besides MS-Office 2007. Of course, I use all three popular web browsers simultaneously which uses lots of memory (as seen in Task Manager).

@Stranglehold - I noticed the setting you mentioned is set to "Auto" in BIOS. I checked with my PC technician who said not to tinker with BIOS settings unless I am very sure, so haven't changed anything after updating BIOS to Version F8d.

Since the SIW s/w reports "Wrong value" against the 2048Mb module, I guess it's something to do with the BIOS or motherboard.

Download and install CPU-Z and see what the timings are under the Memory Tab. Plus what kind of power supply do you have?

@Johnb35 - as advised by you have executed BlueScreenView program and the content of the BSOD.txt file I saved it is as below (also attached) -

Am not tech-savvy enough to understand the above. Hence, hope you can explain / suggest solutions. Thanks.

@Stranglehold - Have run CPU-Z and saved the stats in txt file compressed & attached in zip file as txt file exceeds forum limit of 19.5kb.

Both the memory slots show 1.8V and my PC has a 450W power supply.

The latest BIOS for my Gigabyte GA-945GCM-S2L motherboard is F8d released way back in 2010. Have updated all drivers from the Gigabyte website too. Can't figure out what else could be causing my PC to reboot abruptly.

I would double check that your bios has the correct memory voltages and settings, along with the CPU etc. The voltages in your pc report look a bit off to me. Secondly what exact model is that 450W psu. It may not be providing stable voltages to the CPU causing a restart. If you have a multimeter, then i would be testig the load and idle voltages with that.
