Memory Slot Question

Quick question.

MOBO has 4 memory slots. Is there a significant difference between using 2 sticks of 2 gig memory or 4 sticks of 1 gig memory?

if yous use 4x1, you have no room to upgrade, but SLIGHT preformance gain. on the other hand, with only 2x2, you can upgrade again later. plus i think its cheaper to do it 2x2.

Nope. 2x2 is usually better, certain memory controllers have trouble handling a large number of sticks plus this setup allows you to upgrade in the future (if need be). Also, as Elimin8tor said, less bigger sticks is usually the cheaper option...

...though that part I dare to question. Performance-wise, there should be no difference unless the memory controller has to reduce speeds/loosen timings to handle all 4 sticks properly, in which case the 4-stick setup would perform worse.

...but as I said, there is (usually) no significant difference.
