memory slots

i bought me a computer i might upgrade it later how do i tell how many slots for memory there are without opening the case?

CPU-Z will tell you under the SPD tap, How much that is in each slot and the ones that are empty

i looked on crucials website it said i have 4 slots two empty im thinking of adding 1gb 512x2 to my two empy slots will it work if its a different company of memory?

it shouldn't matter what company as long as the RAM is the same.

Now i personally would suggest that u get the same speed of RAM throughout (i.e. 800mhz, 667 etc) in the even having slower RAM causes freezing (just what I have experienced i don't know about anyone else here)

Tbh mate, it doesn't really matter if you get faster ram because it will just run at the slower speed. DDR/DDR2 ram are both backward compatable so it shouldn't make a difference. Although one thing to note is that you can't put DDR2 ram in with DDR ram. It's either one or the other.
Do you have DDR or DDR2?

ddr2 800 probably is faster than my current so if crucial says it compatable it is?
