What would be the best program for running a mem test? I've never ran a mem test before so the more details about mem tests the better. Thanks!
btw my OS is windows XP 32bit, i have 4GB RAM installed but only 2.5 detected

Because XP is a 32-bit OS it will not utilize 4 gigs of RAM; the max is 3.25 - 3.5. Only 64-bit operating systems can do so. XP runs very well with 2 gigs.

Here: http://www.memtest.org/ Some sites try to "sell" this very free and very safe utility.

Thanks.
Do I have to unplug the computer too when removing the RAM like the tutorial said, I just have to turn it off, no?

Thanks.

I just removed 2 gigs of RAM this week with the computer shut off and not unplugged but I would agree it is better to have it unplugged.

Make sure you are grounded. A simple static electricity spark will fry a motherboard.

What difference does it make unplugging it?
And one more question, the mem test runs the same on laptops too right?

You are dealing with electricity. Even if you turn off the computer, if it isn't unplugged, it is still connected to the power. It is pre-cautionary.

Yes, Memtest will work on laptops as well. Just place your CD/DVD drive as first bootable in the BIOS for both.

Memtest on a CD is a nice free utility to have as a diagnostic tool.
