memory upgrade

on my two Dells, they are older with XP I upgraded to 4gb memory per system, the older Optiplex 280 says 2.99gb on properties right clicking My Computer, Crucial scan reports and can see all four 1gb sticks installed. On the newer of the two properties says 3.5gb. I was hoping for 3.75, my Windows 7 machine says 4gb installed and 3.75gb usable

XP is a 32-bit operating system and can't see all 4GB. Are you sure your old system supports that much RAM?

the Crucial Scan said 4gb was the max, there are 4 physical ddr2 slots, that's all I know, the newer one also has ddr2 with 4 sticks but that came up as 3.5gb, for what i need they are more than adequate and there is nothing in the bios that can be changed, only viewed but not changed

It all depends on the hardware involved how much ram a 32 bit OS will actually see. Usually anywhere from 3.25 to 3.75 but most generally 3.25 to 3.50. Changing the memory remapping option in bios may help if its there.
