Memory upgrading on laptop

I have Acer Aspire 5102 WLMi with 2 x 512MB RAM.
Computer is very sluggish when I'm using softwares like visual studio etc.

So, my intention is to upgrade my laptop's RAM to get a better performance.

There's two slots for RAM so,
is it better to buy one piece of 2GB RAM and have 2GB +0.5GB memory installed
or
to buy 2 x 1GB memories and have 1GB + 1GB.

Thanks for any replies in advance.

2GB if you can afford it, and 2x 1GB if it has Dual Channel.
Thanks for reply, however I didn't quite catch what you meant. So would you care to elaborate.
Do you mean it's better to have 1GB + 1GB
than 2GB + 0.5GB?

Yes, this supports dual channel.

its hard to upgrade laptops
Depends what part(s) you are trying to upgrade. Upgrading the RAM and hard drive are usually simple, although some laptops require that you remove the keyboard to upgrade the RAM, such as Dell's new Inspiron/Vostro series.
