Memory Usage for Antivirus

Hi again folks,

Pardon my copious postings, but I have a burning question. I had Norton's 360; it ate up too much memory, so I got rid of it. I went with MSE for a short time, but I started getting viruses. Now I'm using Charter's Security Suite (aka F-Secure), but it seems to be using a lot of memory too.

What is an acceptable range of memory for an antivirus program to use? I'm wanting to find something that is effective at keeping out viruses, but won't chew up memory like a slop-crazed hog.

I'd appreciate any insights you have. And please bear in mind, as a novice, I'll probably take whatever I hear from you as gospel.

Thanks.

I find MSE works well for me as long as you update it. I guess you could try AVG, its all up to you and there is a list somewhere with all the free AV.

How much system memory do you have installed and also what operating system are you using?

It really doesn't matter what anti virus program you are using if you do no surf the web in a safe manner. You will get infected. I have used MSE for quite some time now and only occasionally got infected, usually when surfing unknown sites. But a combination of MSE and Malaware should be sufficient.

Since you only have 1gb I would say go with MSE. If you had 2gb of memory I would say go with avast.

^This. I've personally used AVG, Avast, and MSE. I found AVG to be rather buggy, but Avast and MSE have both worked well for me. Avast seems more system-intensive, however.

I've been using Avast free version for a while now and have only been infected with a virus once (which it detected in a scan and deleted). I can strongly recommend Avast for viruses and I would also use Malwarebytes or some other malware remover along with it.
