I have a dell 2350 dimension and hold a total of 1 gb of memory and has two slots for it, can I put a 1 gb of memory in one slot and leave the other empty or do I need to put 512 in each slot to make up the 1 gb

Since you have 2 slots and the max is 1GB over those 2 slots, I would recommend getting a 512+512 kit rather than a single 1GB and leaving other slot open.

Yep, I recommend the same! The reason is because the ram would be "dual channeling" meaning that the information being stored on the ram, or going through it I guess, would be unloaded onto two pieces of ram instead of one. Think of it as a two lane highway vs. a one lane highway; same amount of cars can go on each highway, but it's faster going on the two lane.
