Memtest results...

So ive been having problems with starting my computer and some other stuff, so i decided to diagnose my RAM. At first I ran the test and it stopped at 15% and wouldnt get past test #2 [moving inversions, ones & zeros]. So I ran the test on each of the ram separately and they all passed the test. Then at the end I tested all three of them one more time, and then it passed as well. Unfortunately I woke up this morning and ran the test and it did the same thing as the first time I ran it, gets stuck on test 2. Anyone have any idea of what is wrong with my system? If its the ram I am wondering why it passed the test when all three were in it the second time. wow this is a long post.

What motherboard or computer do you have? Are you running triple channel? Not sure if its possible, but you may want to try running the test on a single stick at a time in the same slot, you may have either bad ram or a bad slot.

i have an MSI X58 Pro-E and im using triple channel. Ive tested all of them individually in the first slot and they all passed. I am trying to find out if its the ram or the motherboard.

Tried them all individually in the other slots too? I don't suppose you have another machine handy to try your RAM in that and the other machines RAM in yours do you? When I had RAM issues in one of my machines I had similar results to what you are having with Memtest. Sometimes it'd pass, sometimes it'd fail. The only way I did solve it was to send off for replacement RAM. Are you testing the RAM on a fresh, first of the day switch on? Or after excessive use when the machines all warm and fired up? Your RAM / motherboard wouldn't be over heating would it?

I've had a similar situation these past two days. My second system is a socket 939 with a 4x512 mem configuration. It ran well for a year and a half and then the dreaded Ballistix went south on on me.

Ran all four sticks and I didn't get past the second PASS before I had errors. Ran all four individually, no errors in any, but I didn't run them this first time to the 7 Passes Minimum unwritten rule.

Placed all four back in and then the errors showed up. So to make a long story short I re-ran Memtest on them individually only this time I let each stick run a full 7+ passes and with the two bad ones no errors showed up until the 7th and 8th Pass.

How long did you run Memtest on each individual stick?

I ran the test the whole way through (to step 8 I think) until it says its done, press escape to exit. I have had problems with my system since I first built it, startup issues, crash issues,... but have only recently realized its the RAM.

Just for clarification: There are 8 individual tests per PASS. When all 8 individual tests are done that is one Pass and then it will start again with Test 1 (many people make the mistake that it is just repeating the tests over again but this is not true). The rule is a minimum of 7 Passes.

The way that I read your response was that once the 8th test (step) was done you pressed escape to exit. If I am reading it incorrectly please accept my apology. :)

Correct, when I ran the test I pressed escape after it said it had passed, but that was only because I had one stick in at a time. Would it start over if there was only one stick in?
Thanks.

I had issues running a 4x1GB memory config with my Corsair sticks. The solution was running 2x2GB of the same stuff.

What is your ram configuration? 3x2GB?

nope 3X1Gb. Its weird, When I do it for the first time, it gives me errors. But then after my computers been on for a while it doesn't show any errors usually.

Yes it will restart. Referring to my previous post: 8 Individual Tests Completed = 1 Pass. The recommended minimum # of Passes is 7 (some say 10). Note also in my previous post that I wasn't getting any errors on single sticks until the 7th and 8th Pass.

Corrupted memory can show errors and then nothing for awhile but if you have received erros then you need to replace.

Ok so how do I isolate which stick of ram it is. When i ran them independently through the tests, no errors came up, but when I tried them all together there was an error in the test??

The question is: How many Passes did you allow per individual stick?

i let it run through once, until the pass monitor thing reached 100%, for each of the sticks when I put them in individually. So i put one in the first slot, it passed, took it out, put in the other one, ran the test again, then did the same thing for the last sick.

For each and every single stick of RAM you need Memtest to reach 7 Passes.

Again, my single sticks were Passing through the first Six Passes. It wasn't until I hit the 7th and 8th Pass that errors came up.

You need to let Memtest do its work by allowing it to run at least 7 Passes on each and every stick of RAM you have.

One Pass is NOT sufficient. You need to let it run through 7 Passes per single stick.
