merging empty partition with windows partition

My grandads computer has a 40Gb hard drive which was partitioned as 2 x
20Gb parts... who knows why...
one of the partitions has window installed, the other has nothing at all - no recovery thing from the manufacturer, just nothing... he's running out of space on the C: and its too frustrating teaching him to use the second half, so i was wondering if i can merge the two partitions to be one? I dont have any 3rd party partitioning software on his computer, and the disk managment thing in windows doesn't have a "merge" facility...
I know in partition magic you can resize and merge partitions - but i dont have that on his computer...

help please?!?! he's going on and on and on about 'increasing the memory bank'!!

Download the trial version... Then you can increase the memory bank.

Or dont even tell him. Move all of his large files inot the second partition and creat a shortcut to the desktop. So it looks like it is all in the same place.

oh thanks!

only thing now is waiting an hour for it to download (he's got dialup - going at a phenomenal 4.52KB/sec)

hehe, hopefully it works... If not just move the larger files over to the 2nd partition and link it as a shortcut back to the desktop.

I have the full version of partition pagic and it works great for stuff like this, just resize the normal one to a bigger size.

and if you ever use this for something else, do NOT resize a parition smaller then the used space :( You would think it would be obvoise but I have known 4 people who did it.

i downloaded the demo - all one hour and 30 minutes of the 21Mb file... and it lets you set the changes that you want done but doesn't let you apply them! AAHH!!
so im gonna just move stuff around to make room.

you cant merge two partitions if one of the partitions contains the system folder, unless theres some new magic piece of software out there that does it i know that partition magic cant and pretty sure most others cant either

yeh i realised that... i was hoping to resize the partitions to give C: the majority of the free space, but it wouldnt let me apply the changes...
