Merging word files

Hi folks,
I have a number of word files, which have been numbered separately.
They are different chapters of a book. Now I want to combine all the files and number them all through.What should I do?
I tried "compare and merge" on the Tools menue, but it chages the first file to commentary. I tried copying and pasting each file to the bottom of the other but it was a mess. What is the elegant way of doing it?`

Open a single word file, and drag and drop the files INTO the area you usually write in.

Do this one at a time, or 10 at a time.

Yeah, i had the same problem with my Manufactring coursework. It was all in different files and locations but my teach wanted it in one file so it was easy to mark. I did exactly what Trizoy stated and it works a treat.
