Mesh X-treme - future proofed?

hi guys / girls

i'm new here so be gentle with me! the time has come to replace my 6 year old bog standard time pc, 600mhz athlon, 128mb ram, as you can imagine it's now showing it's age, although it ain't given me any bother in the 6 years so it's served me well.

i'm thinking on replacing it with this:

http://www.meshcomputers.com/Default.aspx?PAGE=PRODUCTVIEWPAGE&USG=PRODUCT&ENT=PRODUCT&KEY=88498

it's bang on what i'm looking to spend (£1100 inc vat) and i reckon it'll serve me well for what it'll be used for i.e. photo and occassional video editing, watching the odd dvd, playing the odd game (i'm by no means a heavy gamer.)

what i'm wondering is how future proofed this pc will be. as i said my existing pc has served me for 6 years and it's only in the last 18 months or so i've been finding it too slow. i appreciate pc technology literally never stands still, however in your opinion will the mesh serve me well for the next 5 years, or is there a major development in processors due within the next year or so that i should be holding off for?

your views would be appreciated!

you will do fine with that computer. Good specs. i could see you getting another 6 out of it. good luck

If your planning on using Windows Vista (new os comming out in january or so) you would have to upgrade your ram to 2GB. Aside from that it looks like it will serve you well for your needs.

thanks for feedback guys. maybe not a fair question to ask (as in long reply would be needed) but are there going to be major advantages to upgrading the OS from XP Media Center Edition 2005 to Vista? if not i'll prob stick with the OS it comes with and leave the RAM at 1GB.

If you want to take full advantage of your system and future software I'd suggest upgrading to Vista. Not to mention Media Center is integrated into Vista.

i'll take your advice, the extra 1GB of RAM doesn't up the price much and can only help the PC run that bit faster in general. what about the graphics (256MB nVIDIA GeForce 7900 GT) reckon that's good enough to see me through the next few years? i very rarely play games so having the latest all singing all dancing card has never been one of my requirements. as long as my new PC can run photo / video editing software quickly enough i'll be happy ;)

those are pretty nice specs and that is kinda what i am looking for and for my price. but im getting an AM2 and prob better quality RAM than what they have.

If you rarely play games you could actually probably downgrade the video card.

I agree, that card is a beast. If you are just an occasional gamer I'd save yourself the money and get a step down or two card.

thanks for continued feedback guys. the spec as it stands is within my price range, i'm going to up the ram to 2gb but think i'll leave the card they offer by default ... means the pc will run the occassional game i play at least reasonably well ... if i downgrade that may lead to me having to upgrade a couple of years from now, if that makes sense!
