Messaging command

hi im new here and i was wondering how you can message workstations on the same network using the command prompt window. My administrator sends me messages on my computer screen but i have no idea how to message him back. Any help would be appreciated. If you still dont understand what im asking for then say so and i will try to add more info.

edit: also im not sure if this is the right section, if not please tell me where to go.

well my admin sent me a message using the net send command, and he was using windows, i was on a mac at the time and i was wondering if you know how to send something like "net send" for a mac. Like what command or what thing should i use to message him back
 
i also looked on google but people said some netbios thing that doesnt work anymore, but i know it works cause my admin sent me a message
 
on windows in command prompt its:
net send computer.ip.address text here

i.e.
net send 192.256.1.27 Hello World

i'm pretty sure it only works if you have the rights to send commands over the network. but again thats only in windows. i dont know if macs have anything like command prompt.
