microphone not working

On a Skype call I found that the other party could not hear me. I, then, opened Control Panel/Hardware and Sound/Manage audio devices. The Recording tab indicates the following:

"High Definition Audio Device Not plugged in"

How do I plug it in?

What kind of microphone do you have? Webcam, built in, headset, etc?

Is there a drop down for the recording, options? If so, have you tried those options?

First of all thanks for the reply. The microphone is built in. Clicking "Recording" does not generate a drop down. Clicking on it get me a screen that says: "select a device below to modify its settings". When I select it the "properties" tab changes from grey to black. Under the word Microphone is the following verbiage: "High Definition Audio Device not plugged in" . The tabs: "configure", "set default" are greyed out.

I don't know whether what I'm going to disclose will help in shedding light to the microphone problem (and others I see popping up here and there).
A few days I was getting warnings from Microsoft that the copy of Windows 7 in my computer might be counterfeited and not licensed. That that might be the case was supported by the fact that, a few weeks earlier, my attempt to install the free Windows 10 didn't go well. The Windows 10 installation process allowed me the option to go back to Windows 7. Which I did. I, then, took my laptop to the computer store (a small one man operation) where nearly one and one half year ago I went to have Windows 7 installed (I had Vista). When I queried the man about the fact that, according to the warnings from Microsoft I had a counterfeit version of Windows 7 instead of the authentic one he asked me to leave the laptop with him saying he'd fix the problem..... I consented though by then, of course, I realized that the fellow was not an honest operator.

As for other more pertinent information my laptop is a HP Pavilion dv9720us with a 64-bit Operating System running Windows 7 Professional installed by computer guy.
