Microphone trouble

I am not getting and imput on my microphone I can't figure out if the computer even recognizes the device.
I am running win98. Any tips would be helpful

If you have not already, check the volume level for the microphone. If you are unsure how to do this read on.

Try double clicking on you speaker icon next to the clock, when the sound control window opens go to Options -> Properties and select recording. Be sure microphone has a check next to it and select ok. When the new window opens make sure there is not a check mark next to mute and the volume is turned up.

The computer recognizes the card (or onboard sound) not the microphone. Check that the drivers are installed correctly and that the card is not loose.
