So they've bought skype, then I heard they were going to buy out Nokia!! They must be scared about their future or something, because they're buying lots of companies. Thoughts?
If they were buying up a bunch of software companies and such I'd agree, but it seems more that they're branching out into other markets, which is just smart. Especially right now while the economy is down.
Lol, no. Nokia is a huge, huge company, they're not going to get bought out by anyone. Nokia is the number one manufacturer of cellphones (and smartphones) worldwide. They did just make a deal with Microsoft though, Nokia's high end phones are going to run Windows Phone 7 exclusively.
As for the Skype deal, well that makes sense on a few levels, although I'm very surprised at how much they paid for it. We're going to see Skype on Kinect, merged with Windows Live Messenger, and even on Windows Phone 7.
Microsoft is working to gain a foothold in the smartphone market. One of the things every mobile OS developer is working on is video conferencing, but Microsoft hasn't done any significant work in that market for years and Skype announced this time last year that they wouldn't be developing for Windows Phone 7, so that was going to put Microsoft way behind. Guess they don't have much of a choice now.
