Microsoft eats my belly with a spoon

Yes, microsoft is that painful.
So I'm moving things over a network to my computer, then I get an error message saying I have low space, and that Disk Cleanup is recommended. Sure, whatever. I click okay. It asks what I would like to do. I click compress and some other stuff. While it's compressing, I get another error message, which I can't remember exactly what it said, but something like: "Some important windows system files were modified. Please insert the disk [didnt specify which, im assuming winXP] and click retry." Well MCE came pre-installed on my computer, so I had no choice but to press cancel. It said something about winows losing stability, and i had to press okay. The error message popped up a few more times until I pressed cancel on the Compressing Old Files.

I've been getting a lot of errors since, like random programs crashing, which might be caused by the low disk space, and i tend to have a lot of programs open with only 512mb RAM.

So my question is, did my computer totally screw over? Is it bad? Will microsoft start using a fork instead of spoon? I'm scared.

(I will be getting a new harddrive soon)

It's known that Windows many times can't work correctly if there is not enough free space.I usually try to keep at least 2gb of free space when using Windows.

You'll probably need to do a fresh install of windows to fix the errors, so after you get your new hard drive move everything to that one and fromat the hard drive you have windows installed on.

Just make sure you have at least double the space on your secondary drive as you do your primaary. That's my rule of thumb at least.
