Which version is it Windows XP Home or Professional?

You said that your mum was the computer administrator. Try uninstalling MS Office > Make yourself an administrator and then install it again. It might work :)

I asked my husbands advice on this one and he said

You need to login to your Mothers Account and then go to edit user settings and give your self Administration rights as well.

I have run into this same problem before if you don’t have Admin privileges it won’t do a successful install

Once you have set your self with admin privileges login to your account and then install the program you wish.

To easily switch from one user to the next hold the Window key and press L to lock and Load the login page saves time rebooting or re-starting your computer.

That’s one way to do it there is another way but you will again need to login to your mothers account and then go to CONTROL PANEL Performance and Maintenance -> Administrative Tools , Once there review the settings for your account by clicking the Local Security Policies and set some of the default settings to allow you to successfully install applications without being and Administrator as well

Good Luck
