Migrate Office 2000 to Office 2010

Greetings all,

Looking to travel to my relative out of state to do some work for him (disabled vet). He has win xp pro and office 2000 (plenty of ram and hd space and processor speed) currently installed on his dell tower and wants to install win 7 and office 2010.

He is having some problems even deleting his current e-mails singularly of in multiple "batches". Most if not all of the time, it fails. I read about the 2gb limit with outlook mail but, am unsure if he has reached that (believe he may have as he has a few thousand mails in the "in" and "sent" boxes).

I told him to save as much info from his "my docs folder" to flash drives or dvdrw's before i reformat his hd prior to my arrival there in 2 weeks. So, what is the best way to save all his e-mails and related so that they can be 'migrated" into office 2010??

HOW is (procedurally) the saved info migrated to 2010?.......Lastly, anyone have thoughts as to why he is having difficulty deleting his e-mails? He has tried this in safe mode but, received the same results. Thanks again!

Not sure what the problem is here. When you install 2010 you should get the option to "upgrade" at the beginning.

Upgrading would keep everything intact. If you don't get the upgrade option at the beginning then you would want to back everything up.

Basically all thats needed is to backup your pst file and then install office 2010 then import the pst file back into outlook 2010. Just google on how to do this.

Thanks for the reply!.....

His current installation is totally messed up.... I am traveling there on Friday and will reformat his computer......I have to save all his e-mail and transfer to his "new to come" windows 7 operating system that i will be installing....

.....I accessed his computer from here (Florida) and like I said, when he attempts to delete e-mails in outlook (office 2000) most of the time he gets an error with the mail program....I just found out that he has 7,000+ (yes, that is seven thousand plus) e-mails in just his "in" box!....

.....So, based on the formatting issue, I have to save all his e-mails from office 2000 (outlook) and HOPEFULLY transfer them to office 2010 (outlook)....that is why i asked the question;

...."HOW is (procedurally) the saved info migrated to 2010?.......Lastly, anyone have thoughts as to why he is having difficulty deleting his e-mails? He has tried this in safe mode but, received the same results.....

..Is there a single specific file i can save that will transfer directly into Office 2010?....Will there be any problems migrating the office 2000 mails into office 2010 (outlook)?.....what i did (from here remotely) was saved almost everything on his computer to external drives, etc last night....This afternoon, i will attempt to use the office 2000 repair tool it comes with to see if that will fix the corrupted program however, i wanted to save the mail FIRST so that if something goes wrong, he doesn't lose it all.....

UPDATE.......

......Tried the office 2000 "fix/repair" tool and got an error message...no good....Backed up his mail/folders with a few programs(just for added security in case of loss or data corruption) including exporting the pst file....Would there be any known issues with transferring this to windows 7 and office 2010?

Greetings----back again with an update:

.....I had to reformat the computer in question:( and have reinstalled office 2000...I also saved an almost 1gb PST file...i went to the "import/export" section of office 2000 and went through the steps to reinstall all the e-mails/contacts/address books/ect but, no good.:mad:

.....i am so burned out after wrestling with this for 2 solid days that i half can't remember what i am doing and to top it all off, i leave here in 2 days....i saved the small file (inf??) and that goes in fine (that file restores his passwords/internet settings/internet configuration-access).....

.....i did some reading and to play it safe, made back up copies of the ORIGINAL pst file and unchecked the read only attribute as i read that office will/may try and write to it when importing...

....i attempted to simply delete the existing pst and substitute the saved one (after a new installation of office 2000) and that crapped out too....:mad:

.....little to go on i am sure but, i don't want to reinstall office 2000 and set up multiple "profiles" due to multiple attempts to do this or anything like that that will mess-up the outlook section of office 2000....ANY ANY ANY assistance would be greatly appreciated.

(any 3rd party tools i could "check into" that will do the migration for me?)

On a side not (without having to start another thread), win xp is already on this computer - i want to dual boot windows 7 - would win 7 set up the partition for me when i attempt to load it/install it OR, do i have to acquire a 3rd party program to partition the drive?).

......THANKS VERY MUCH AGAIN!

Windows 7 must be installed on a separate partition from XP on the drive or on a totally different drive. So if there are no other partitions on the drive then you must use a program to shrink C and create a new partition for windows 7.

It's a bit different for me at work since we have every thing synced from mail servers but when I migrate profiles in Office 2010 I just do a desktop search for .pst files. If you can't find them, they might be hidden so either show the hidden files and look in AppData\Microsoft\Outlook. If you go to a run prompt you can type in
PHP:
%APPDATA%\Microsoft

Search around those folders for a local .pst file. Hopefully that will be the right one to import the local saved emails.

yes, i am totally aware of that

just the existing partition with xp on it...i was somewhat curious if the installation of win 7 would ask if i wanted to create a partition during installation.

you missed what i said...i have a saved pst file from the computer before i reformatted it - i have (or had) reinstalled win xp and office 2000 and cannot import the saved pst file into it....it is NOT that i cannot find it.

they might be hidden so either show the hidden files
all files are unhidden (and see above)

and look in AppData\Microsoft\Outlook. If you go to a run prompt you can type in

see above..i have a single saved pst file i am trying to import into a new installation.

Ok sorry I missed that.

Just for my clarification, are you trying to import a pst file from an office 2000 install to an office 2010 install? or is it the other way around? I can see that you did find the pst file earlier but I am getting a bit confused since the thread moved from office installs to windows installs and back very quickly.

no sweat -stuff happens

ha - neither.....you missed that too!....i have win xp...and office 2000[/B], saved the pst file before i reformatted my brothers computer here......reinstalled xp and office 2000 after reformatting..

or is it the other way around?
see above

never lost it to have to find it...grin

but I am getting a bit confused since the thread moved from office installs to windows installs and back very quickly.
Here:
1) i saved a pst file from win xp and office 2000 before reformatting.......

2) i reformatted computer and reinstalled the exact same win xp and office 2000 back into it.....

3) I am attempting to re-introduce/import the pst saved as mentioned in #1.

4) before i leave here, i also have to find a simplistic program that i can partition hard drive and install win 7 onto it....

5) then, i will attempt to put his saved pst file (as in #1) into win 7 and office 2010 ***i have to completer steps 1-4 before attempting this...

UPDATE:

......Well, looks like the knowledge bank died on this thread!...i did however find the solution to the importing the pst file as mentioned...It involved manipulating the saved pst file itself before importing...At 1.5gb's, it was a VERY slow process importing the file into Outlook 2010.

..Now, after i created a partition for dual booting (win xp on one side and win 7 on the other side), the installation of win 7 failed 4x's......I finally gave up and formatted the entire computer and just installed win 7 (which is a colossal piece of $hit).

Thanks again for the help provided.
