Minimizing the resolution in lInux!?

Hello all,
Well I have installed Linux THe MEPIS distribution, no pro with that
but when I log in to the root account, I couldnt adjust the screen resolution to what I need, so is there a solution 2 it?

edit the xorg.conf or xf86.conf file assuming whatever GUI it uses doesnt have an option to do this

where is that file located? and for what is that file?

usually its in /etc or in /etc/X11, its the configuration file for the X server settings

So, just a question that always I think of:
how could I know that file from its name, how could I start knowing the configuration files?

You should register with that linux distro's forum that they have (if any). I only learnt stuff like this by doing lots of customization to the feel and look of the GUI. And I learnt alot of commands in the terminal becuase of this too...
