Minimum Gaming System

I'm looking to get my son a laptop which can easily play his minecraft and various steam games. I've been looking at the lenovo Y580 for around $800-$900 but do I need to go that high? I've really just been looking at anything with a discrete video card. Thanks
 
what steam games is he playing exactly? Something like Call Of Duty will not be hard to play. Something like Metro 2033 is a complete different beast.

Personally, I can't recommend anything without knowing the exact games, and the settings he hopes to get with it (running low is going to be leagues easier than running maxxed out).
 
update

He's only Team Fortress 2, Gary's Mod, Binding of Isaac, awesomnauts on steam. Then it's just minecraft and yogscast and youtube.
 
Minimum

I guess what I'm trying to get at is do I need to go beyond the Integrated 4000 graphics to play the game types listed.
