Minor OC'ing Question

Hey all, new poster here, great boards, hoping to OC my new i7 build soon..

I've only recently gotten all my Bios and Asus utilities working properly, I'm running an Asus P6T Deluxe V2 with an i7 920 CPU

I was curious, I opened my TurboV Application and it read that my DRAM BUS Voltage was set to 1.80v

Now I remember reading that i7 isn't supposed to have RAM set above 1.65v for longevity issues, can anyone confirm this and give me some insight on how I can ensure my computer isn't frying :)

Thanks Guys

***EDIT*** Now I'm curious, below my "DRAM BUS Voltage" I see "QPI/DRAM Core Volt", is that the actual RAM voltage Intel is referring to, in not exceeding 1.65v ?

No one?

I had some follow-up questions to boot, in reference to my cooling/OC ratio, I've got a 1366 Noctua HS with both fans installed, as well an high quality outake 120 mm fan behind it and I idle at 38c which seems rather high, I've seen the 60s while running 8 threads of Prime95, but no Bluescreens/errors.. So I'm not sure why my temps are higher than I anticipated, maybe I need another intake fan in the front of my case.

As far as OC'ing goes, are my temps too high at stock to really mess with +3.0GHz?

Thanks Ya'll!

I'm not familiar with the Asus settings, nor am I an OC guru, so I can't really help you sort which voltage is which.

I have the same cooler and I idle near 40c as well, and my Prime95 runs
never broke 60c. Very close, but they stayed under 60c. I'm at 3.43Ghz.

If you're seeing the same temps, and you're not overclocked yet, you may
need to evaluate your airflow in your case. Which case do you have?

I am using the ABS Black Pearl..I hope I don't get criticism for it's price..it is definitely the best case I've owned overall..I'm glad I spent the extra buck.

I should have mentioned, I know there is a single-primary problem with my airflow, it has no intake setup in the Mobo section. If you find an image of my case you'll see, stock- it only comes with 1 intake fan in the HDD/PSu Section of the case.

I was just assuming this Noctua was going to be amazing. I mean, it's doing a good job, I just expected a great job..especially with 2x120mm fans attached to it..which I am positive is flowing in the correct direction.

@suski89 - Thanks! PM incoming.

This is going to sound incredibly dumb of me, but how do I PM on these boards? I can't find the option anywhere lol

Oh boy...

The best cpu air cooler will not cool a cpu with hot air. It needs fresh, cool air.
You'll need to get some more fans in the case to get your temps down.

I'm waiting on the black Kama Bay fans (120mm) going to install two in my leftover drivebay space, that should do it..they've only had white in stock for sometime, I'll have to look elsewhere I guess.

I know this sounds insane, but I went to his profile and everything, I see no button, is the button an invisible mouse-over?

Ha

You have to have 100 posts to be able to PM :P Sorry I forgot. Do you use msn or aim ? I'd prefer if you had steam but if you don't i can install msn/aim.

I looked at your case and it seems to have two mounts on top for fans right?

I would mount fans in those spots on top, blowing DOWN onto your board, and make the fan on the back of the case to blow OUT.

I might even mount one fan on top blowing DOWN and one on the Mesh on the door blowing IN.

Those temps still seem high, because that case is pretty well ventilated.

What method did you use for applying the Thermal Paste?

I added you. Did u get an invite?

What are your temps with noctua bodaggit ? Do you have 1 or 2 fans ?

As far as the thermal paste goes, used the stock spread that comes from Noctua so I am sure is quality enough, just dotted a bit in the middle about..1/8"-3/16" diameter..is that too little? I used a bit on my last build, an E8400 Core2Duo..Noctua suggested that much, so I'll be sure to send them a friendly email if I'm burning my CPU.

I was also considering lapping it?

Well as far as the case fans go, I don't want to mess with the mess siding just yet, it's sturdy enough, but I believe with my 2x120mm drive bay fans coming, those, with good 120mm fans will do the trick.

The problem with those top fans is that I have only 2 spare 120mm fans, they are Scythe's big boys and end up getting in the way of my Mobos power panel(Led's etc) as well as the USB ports.

So I have to find some thin 120's or something.
