hi guys,
I am trying to reformat a lap top for a friend. I have downloaded, windows xp pro with service pack 2 integrated. The download said it was a bootable disc but its missing the boot.ini file, is there any sites i can go to to download this file to make this dic bootable. As I tried already unsuccessfully. Thanks, guys.:)

Format that laptop immediately, because that software is full of viruses, spyware, and all sorts of bad stuff.

Also, what you did is illegal.

Go to the nearest shop, buy a copy of windows and install that on the computer if you want it to work.

I am aware that its illegal, but I don't have the money and neither does my friend at the moment, so I was just doing it on a tempory basis as dhe needs her lap top back asap. And then when one of us has the cash to purchase the original then we will make it official. But I appreciate your concern.

What do you (or your friend) need the computer for? Chances are you could get away with using Linux until you can afford a legit copy of Windows - who knows, you may even start liking Linux and rather use it over XP (or Vista).

Linux is a full-fledged and most importantly COMPLETELY FREE (and legit) operating system and can do pretty much everything Windows can, and Wine (a windows emulator for Linux) can run many Windows programs without a problem, really the only apps it doesn't run well are usually games. For most Windows apps, there's free equivalent for Linux, so unless you need to use some special software (or Windows Games), Linux should be fine for you.
